British actress Florence Pugh indicated that director Christopher Nolan apologized to her regarding the size of her role in the film Oppenheimer, in which she portrayed a member of the Communist Party who had a romantic relationship with physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. In a conversation with MTV UK, Pugh explained how Nolan apologized when he offered her the role, saying, "I didn't really know what was happening or what had been written, but I knew that Nolan wanted me to understand that this role wasn't very big, and that he would understand if I didn't want to take it. However, I told him: it doesn't matter the size of the role I'm playing." Pugh met Nolan in New York while filming "Good Person" directed by Zach Braff to discuss her role in "Oppenheimer," which she describes as a "strange moment."
