Macron Contacts Iraqi Prime Minister... Will He Visit Lebanon?

President Emmanuel Macron discussed the ongoing arrangements for the second Baghdad Conference, expected to be held in Amman this month, during a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani. The two officials addressed the conditions in the region and expressed their concerns regarding the rising escalation and tensions.

Macron noted that Iraq could rely on France's support in facing threats and during attempts to undermine its sovereignty and stability, and they also addressed the topic of combating terrorism.

Macron invited Al-Sudani to visit France early next year.

Macron and Al-Sudani agreed to continue coordinating with each other and with Jordan to prepare for the Baghdad 2 Conference in Amman, which will bring together senior officials from the region and the French president before the end of the year.

Informed sources indicated that the conference is scheduled to take place in Amman on the 20th of this month, and did not rule out that Macron might make a brief visit to Lebanon afterward to meet with French troops working as part of UNIFIL.

It is worth noting that French presidents traditionally visit their military forces stationed abroad during the holidays, and Macron was expected to make this visit last year, but it was postponed due to his COVID-19 infection.
