The President of the American University of Beirut, Fadlallah Khoury, and the President of Saint Joseph University, Father Salim Daccash, emphasized in a joint statement that "freedom of expression is the foundation of Lebanon's uniqueness and its sustainability in the region." They explained that freedom of expression is at the core of the message of universities, specifically the American University and Saint Joseph University in Beirut. These two universities were established before the emergence of Greater Lebanon and will continue to carry the flame of complete freedom of expression and thought in creativity and dialogue, allowing for a life in Lebanon that respects and strengthens the freedom of others to think and express, as Nelson Mandela said.
In their joint statement, they noted, "Recently, we are witnessing a systematic crackdown on some rights activists, journalists, academics, and public opinion figures, and we find it important to highlight the seriousness of these practices that directly undermine the liberties guaranteed by the Lebanese constitution." They continued, "The two universities, beacons of open and free higher education and freedom of expression, will spare no effort in always promoting the flourishing of enlightened and free minds by creating an environment for constructive dialogue on their campuses and among the diverse segments of society, which is based on the freedom of individuals to express their thoughts and opinions, and this is the foundation of Lebanon's uniqueness in the region."
