Egypt Resumes Daylight Saving Time

The Egyptian Cabinet announced in a statement today, Wednesday, that daylight saving time will begin, advancing the clock by 60 minutes starting from the day after tomorrow, Friday. The new time will be in effect from the last Friday of April until the last Thursday of October each year. The Cabinet had announced in March its intention to resume the daylight saving time system after a seven-year hiatus, as part of government efforts to conserve energy. Last year, the government announced a set of rules aimed at reducing energy usage in government and commercial institutions. The Cabinet stated that the implementation of the clock adjustment "comes in light of the global economic conditions and changes, and as an effort by the government to rationalize energy consumption." The last time daylight saving time was observed was in 2014, and its implementation has occurred several times, with some viewing it as a remnant of previous governments in the country.
