The U.S. House of Representatives approved today, Thursday, a Republican bill aimed at preventing transgender women and girls from competing in sports at girls' and women's schools in the United States. The House voted in favor with 219 members supporting it, while 203 opposed it. However, the chances of passing it in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, are slim. In this context, President Joe Biden expressed his opposition to the bill, calling it "discriminatory" and pledged to use his veto power against it if necessary.
If passed, the bill would amend the civil rights law known as Title IX to require that a student's gender "be based on the individual's reproductive biology and genetics at birth." Title IX, in effect since 1972, prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs or activities receiving federal funding. It was enacted to ensure equal opportunities in participation and to open the door for more women to engage in sports activities.
