Deputy Ashraf Rifi mentioned that "in the current discussions about the municipal election law, the municipal elections of Tripoli are being presented in a distorted manner regarding the lack of Christian and Alawite representatives in the current municipal council elected in 2016." He stated in a statement that "the truth is that based on the city's national atmosphere, which insists on true national participation, we proposed that the Christian and Alawite names be unified on the two competing lists (the authority list and the civil society list) to ensure national participation according to the recognized quota. However, the opposing list (the authority list) rejected this and insisted otherwise." Rifi added, "At that time, Tripoli elected nationally, and the Christian and Alawite members lost by a narrow margin. We provide this clarification for history and to do justice to the city, and many witnesses to this are present."
