The police in the state of Santa Catarina, in the city of Blumenau in southern Brazil, announced today, Wednesday, that at least four children were killed and four others injured when a 25-year-old man armed with a small axe attacked a daycare in the state. The police arrested the man responsible for the attack, and local security chief, Marcio Alberto Filipi, indicated that the assailant entered the private daycare after climbing its walls. The Santo Antonio Hospital in Blumenau stated that "the four injured children, aged between three and five years, are receiving medical care." Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described the attack in a tweet as "brutal." He continued, "A tragedy like this is unacceptable, a foolish act of hatred and cowardice, an act of violence against innocent defenseless children. There is no greater pain than that of a family that loses its children or grandchildren, especially in an act of violence against innocent and helpless children. My condolences and prayers to the families of the victims and the community of Blumenau in light of the monstrosity that occurred at the Bom Pastor daycare."
