The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced on Wednesday that it is "considering imposing stricter sanctions than the three-year suspension imposed on former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales." FIFA stated: "The Disciplinary Committee wishes to affirm that it leans towards imposing harsher penalties in light of the severity of the events in question as well as the profound negative impact that the defendant's actions have left on FIFA's image, women's football, and women's sport in general." FIFA also noted that after "considerable hesitation," the Disciplinary Committee was convinced that a three-year suspension would have the necessary deterrent effect.
