Xinhua News Agency reported today that a gas leak explosion at a barbecue restaurant in the Ningxia region of northwestern China resulted in the deaths of 31 people, prompting President Xi Jinping to order stricter supervision of safety measures. The explosion occurred last night in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, and was caused by a leak from a liquefied petroleum gas tank at the restaurant. The state-run news agency added that seven people are receiving treatment for burns and injuries. China Central Television reported that President Xi ordered authorities to do their utmost to treat the injured. Explosions related to gas and chemicals are not uncommon in China, despite efforts to improve safety measures over the years. In 2015, a series of explosions in the northern coastal city of Tianjin resulted in 173 deaths.
