Dismissal of Chinese Defense Minister

Today, the Chinese leadership conducted a reshuffling of senior positions, which included the dismissal of Defense Minister Li Shangfu and the removal of former Foreign Minister Qin Gang from the State Council. In mid-September, the Washington Post reported that U.S. officials stated that the Chinese defense minister was under investigation for corruption and was likely to be dismissed, marking the latest in a series of high-level purges within Beijing's security ranks. Qin Gang was also removed from his position as foreign minister in July after he had been absent from public appearances for a month, with his predecessor Wang Yi reinstated.
