Nepalese officials stated today, Tuesday, that "landslides caused by heavy rains have resulted in at least one death, and a major highway was closed this week, bringing the death toll from the monsoon rains so far to nearly 40." The rains experienced by the Himalayan nation from June to September result in dozens of deaths each year, with many others missing due to the landslides and floods they cause. The Ministry of Home Affairs reported that "38 people have died so far this year, and at least 33 people are missing." They added that rescuers are also searching for six other individuals who went missing after a landslide swept away their home in a village near the capital, Kathmandu. The police also stated that the landslides have closed a major highway connecting the capital to the southern plains.
