Preliminary data indicated that the S&P 500 index rose by 29.75 points, or 0.66 percent, to close at 4439.28 points, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 75.22 points, or 0.55 percent, to 13760.70 points, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 303.11 points, or 0.89 percent, to 34247.51 points. Among the biggest gainers on the S&P 500 during the day was shares of Activision Blizzard, the video game company, which surged after a U.S. judge ruled that Microsoft could proceed with its planned acquisition of the company.
