Russia Launches Anti-Ship Missiles at Target in the Sea of Japan

The Russian Navy launched anti-ship missiles and supersonic projectiles at a fictitious target in the Sea of Japan today, Tuesday. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced via its Telegram account, "In the waters of the Sea of Japan, ships of the Pacific Fleet launched Moskit cruise missiles at a fictitious enemy maritime target."

It added, "The target, which was approximately one hundred kilometers away, was successfully hit directly by two Moskit cruise missiles."

Tokyo Remains "Vigilant" Regarding Moscow's Military Operations

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed that Tokyo will remain vigilant regarding Moscow's military operations, adding that no damages had been recorded following the missile launch. Hayashi stated in a regular press conference, "With the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian military activity in the Far East is increasing, which includes areas adjacent to Japan."

In response to a question about Russia's plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Hayashi condemned this move and urged Russia and Belarus to halt "such actions that would escalate tensions."

The missile launch comes a week after two Russian strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear warheads flew over the Sea of Japan for more than seven hours in what Moscow claimed was a "planned" flight. The P-270 Moskit missile is a Soviet-origin supersonic cruise missile with a range of up to 120 kilometers, capable of destroying a ship.
