Death of Panamanian Defender Hernandez in Shooting Incident

The Panama Football Federation announced in a statement the death of defender Gilberto Hernandez after local media reported that he was killed in a shooting incident in the city of Colón on Sunday. Hernandez (26 years old) played for Atletico Independiente de La Chorrera, a team competing in Panama's top league, as well as having made two appearances for the national team. The federation stated via X platform: "The federation regrets the death of Gilberto Hernandez" and extended its "sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, the entire Atletico Independiente family, and the football community in Panama." Local media reported that "Hernandez was killed in a shooting in Colón, and seven other people were injured." The police announced in a statement on Monday that they "had arrested a suspect in the murder of the football player that occurred on Sunday in Colón province."
