The Egyptian presidency announced that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed yesterday, Wednesday, at the Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo. They discussed ways to resolve the crisis in Sudan, enhance bilateral relations between Egypt and Ethiopia, and address the Renaissance Dam issue.
A joint statement indicated that Sisi and Abiy agreed to initiate urgent negotiations to reach an agreement between the two countries, as well as Sudan, regarding the rules for filling and operating the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The statement mentioned that the leaders would make every necessary effort to finalize the agreement within four months.
Egypt is hosting a summit for the neighboring countries of Sudan today, Thursday, to discuss ways to end the ongoing conflict for the past 12 weeks between the army and rapid support forces, which has caused a significant humanitarian crisis in the region.
Egypt and Ethiopia, the two largest neighbors of Sudan, have been in disagreement for years over the construction of the massive dam known as the Renaissance Dam, intended for hydroelectric power generation on the Blue Nile near the border with Sudan.
