The Burkina Faso army announced today, Tuesday, that 17 soldiers and 36 volunteer fighters were killed in violent clashes with militants in the north of the country yesterday, Monday, marking the worst attack the West African nation has experienced in months. Burkina Faso has been fighting armed groups, some linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, in the northern part of its territory since 2015. The army stated in a statement that the latest clashes occurred yesterday in the Yatenga province, where the military is attempting to reclaim territory to allow displaced people to return home. Operations in the region are still ongoing.
