South Korea Arrests Dozens on Espionage Charges

The South Korean news agency "Yonhap" reported today that "police have arrested 77 individuals suspected of involvement in 35 espionage-related cases in the industrial sector, uncovered during a recent nationwide investigation." According to the National Police Agency, "most of the cases involve local companies only, but 8 of the cases relate to the leakage of technological secrets to China or other countries."

The report stated that "the number of cases involving information leaks abroad is double that of cases following similar investigations conducted a year ago."

The agency's report mentioned that "authorities apprehended one suspect for leaking confidential information after moving from a local company to a Chinese one." The report added, "the Chinese company promised to pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars and cover housing, education, and living expenses in exchange for the information."
