Argentinian star Lionel Messi, forward for Paris Saint-Germain, has broken a new record in the Champions League during his team's 3-1 victory over Maccabi Haifa in the second round of the group stage. Messi scored the first goal for his team in the 37th minute of the first half after an exquisite pass from his teammate Mbappe inside the penalty area. With this goal, the Argentine became the first player to score against the highest number of opponents in the Champions League, having netted against 39 different clubs throughout his Champions League career. The "Opta" network reported that Messi surpassed the record of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who previously shared the top spot with 38 teams. French forward Karim Benzema of Real Madrid came in third, having scored against 34 different clubs. Ronaldo is absent from this season's Champions League as he is with Manchester United, which did not qualify for the continental competition and is only participating in the Europa League.
