The Nevada desert witnessed an unprecedented traffic jam following the conclusion of the Burning Man contemporary art festival, which is held annually in Black Rock, a temporary city specifically created for the event. Heavy rains hindered participants' movement on the highway, where thousands of cars were meant to converge. The week-long event took place from August 28 to September 4, attracting over 70,000 attendees. Tens of thousands of participants travel to and from the festival along a two-lane highway, which was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
