Zelensky Warns: Security of Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant Is Not Guaranteed

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited frontline sites in the Zaporizhia region of southeastern Ukraine on Monday, where he met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi. Grossi tweeted that the two sides had a "rich" exchange of views regarding the protection of the plant and its staff, adding that he reaffirmed the agency's full support for Ukraine's nuclear facilities.

Zelensky informed IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on Monday that the security at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant cannot be guaranteed until Russian troops leave. According to the presidential website, Zelensky stated, "Without the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and personnel from the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant and surrounding areas, any initiatives to restore nuclear safety and security are doomed to fail." Zelensky also relayed the issues arising from Russian attacks on the Dnipro hydroelectric power station and emphasized that the role of the agency's director in maintaining energy security in Ukraine is "very important."
