Government officials have revealed that at least 16 people died, and six others were injured in an incident suspected to be caused by electrocution in Uttarakhand, northern India, on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred inside a sewage treatment plant located in the Chamoli district, as part of an important federal government program focused on preserving the Ganges River. Officials stated that among the deceased were a police officer and three members of the internal security forces, adding that the guards are believed to have died while attempting to rescue the officer. A judicial investigation into the incident has been initiated. The district's magistrate, Himanshu Korana, noted that "the details of how the incident occurred will only clarify after a thorough investigation, but it appears to be an electrocution incident."
