Title: Four Security Personnel Killed in Clashes in Egypt

Two security sources reported today, Monday, that "four security personnel were killed in clashes at a police compound in the city of al-Arish in the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula." The sources, who requested anonymity, stated that "the clashes erupted on Sunday when a group of detainees seized weapons inside the central security compound in al-Arish, in northern Sinai, and attacked the stationed forces there." They revealed that "one police officer was among the dead, and six others were injured." Egyptian security forces have been facing an insurgency led by militants for years in northern Sinai, and they have recently sought to establish control over the coastal area extending from the border with the Gaza Strip to the northern tip of the Suez Canal. Areas in northern Sinai continue to experience sporadic attacks, and the army and police are increasing their presence in these areas.
