The Japanese parliament has taken a significant step to address the challenges facing the imperial family's succession process, approving a series of proposals and amendments aimed at ensuring the continuity of the imperial institution amid a decline in eligible male heirs.
This move is crucial as the future line of succession heavily depends on Prince Hisahito, 19, the only young male heir in the Japanese imperial family, who is second in line to the throne after his father.
The widely-supported proposals include allowing princesses to retain their membership in the imperial family even after marrying outside the royal lineage. This marks a significant shift from current rules, which require princesses to leave the family post-marriage.
The recommendations also suggest that the imperial family be allowed to adopt male relatives from distant branches of the imperial lineage to increase the number of members who can perform official duties and ensure the continuity of the institution.
House of Representatives Speaker Eisuke Mori explained that males who may be adopted in the future will not automatically acquire the right to ascend to the throne, although their descendants might be included in the imperial line of succession based on the proposed amendments.
Mori emphasized that the achieved consensus in parliament represents the best possible solution at this stage to tackle the growing challenges facing the succession system while maintaining a balance between imperial traditions and demographic realities.
Under current law, the right to ascend the throne remains restricted to males descended from the emperor's paternal line, excluding Princess Aiko, Emperor Naruhito's daughter, from the line of succession despite her standing in the royal family.
These recommendations are set to be forwarded to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to prepare a formal bill for a final vote in parliament. It is anticipated that its approval will constitute one of the most significant changes to the Japanese imperial institution in decades.
