Biden Signs Guestbook at Hiroshima Peace Museum, Ignores Apology

U.S. President Joe Biden left a message in the guestbook at the Hiroshima Peace Museum, which commemorates the victims of the American atomic bombing of the city on August 6, 1945. A statement from the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Saturday noted that "Biden called for maintaining hope in building a world free of nuclear weapons without apologizing for the nuclear strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

In his message, Biden wrote: "Let the stories of this museum remind us all of our commitment to building a peaceful future. Let us continue to make progress together towards the day we can permanently rid the world of nuclear weapons. Keep the faith."

The leaders of the G7, who met in Hiroshima on Friday, visited the Peace Park, where the museum and memorial for the victims of the atomic bombing are located, laid wreaths, planted a cherry tree, and met with a survivor of the bombing. Biden became the second U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, following Barack Obama in 2016, who also did not apologize for the nuclear bombing.
