Officials announced today, Sunday, that Japan has loaned Jordan $100 million to assist in the reform of the electricity sector as part of Tokyo's support for the kingdom's reforms guided by the International Monetary Fund. Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi stated, "Japan will continue to support Jordan in its economic and financial reforms and future modernization efforts," during joint comments with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi at the start of his visit to the kingdom. Japan is one of the main donors to Jordan, having contributed over four billion dollars in loans, aid, and technical support over the past few decades. Jordanian King Abdullah visited Tokyo in April, where he discussed a new economic aid package and Japan's support in financing a large seawater desalination plant on the Red Sea to help address the chronic water shortage crisis in Jordan. Hayashi will travel to Egypt tomorrow, Monday, and then to Saudi Arabia.
