American Senator: Declassifying Report on Shireen Abu Akleh's Killing

American Senator Chris Van Hollen has called for the declassification of a government report regarding the killing of American journalist of Palestinian descent, Shireen Abu Akleh, a reporter for Al Jazeera, who was shot while covering an Israeli army raid last year. Israel states, "It is possible that an Israeli soldier fired at Shireen by accident, but it is also likely that she was killed by Palestinian fire."

Shireen's family believes she was killed intentionally. Witnesses to the incident claim there were "no armed Palestinians firing in the area where she was standing." The American security coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority conducted an investigation, but the report remains classified. Van Hollen, a Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated, "The report contains important information about her killing." He emphasized that "releasing the report is crucial to ensure accountability for the shooting of an American citizen and her death," even though the American security coordinator's team was unable to conduct an independent investigation due to their inability to interview key witnesses.
