Latvia's Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš announced his resignation today, citing deteriorating relations with some members of the multi-party government. He stated at a press conference, "I will submit my resignation and that of this government to the president this Thursday." Like its Baltic neighbors Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia is among the leading countries calling for the European Union and NATO to increase pressure on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine. In a post on the social media platform "X," Kariņš mentioned that his government partners pressured him to make this decision due to their "obstruction of the work aimed at achieving prosperity and economic growth." Relations between Kariņš and parties in the coalition government soured after they failed to agree on a single candidate for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for May. Kariņš added that the New Unity party intends to choose its candidate for prime minister on Wednesday.
