The Western Sahara File on the United Nations Table

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita held talks in Rabat today, Friday, with the United Nations Secretary-General's special envoy for Western Sahara, Stefan de Mistura, who is on a tour for consultations with the concerned parties. This is de Mistura's first visit to the region since his appointment in November 2021. A statement from the Moroccan Foreign Ministry indicated that the visit "is part of a regional tour aimed at reviving the political process of roundtable discussions involving Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario, in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 2654 adopted in 2022." Prior to the meeting, de Mistura visited the cities of Laayoune, the largest city in Western Sahara, and Dakhla, where he held meetings with elected representatives, elders, local dignitaries, and representatives of civil society, youth, and women.
