Libyan Court Sentences Death Penalty to Participants in ISIS Attacks

The Misrata Criminal Court in Libya issued a ruling on Monday sentencing 23 individuals to death and 14 others to life imprisonment for their involvement in attacks carried out by ISIS, which included the killing of a group of Egyptian Copts and the control of the city of Sirte in 2015. The Public Prosecutor's Office stated that "a judgment was issued against another individual to 12 years in prison, along with six others receiving ten years each, and one receiving five years, while five defendants were acquitted and the criminal case against three was dismissed due to their deaths before the conviction." Mustafa Salem Al-Trabelsi, head of the Martyrs and Missing Persons Organization in Sirte, expressed hope for a death penalty sentence for all the accused, while indicating acceptance of the current rulings. Fawzia Arhuma welcomed the death sentences in court after her son was killed by ISIS members at a power station near Sirte, expressing that she only felt relief today because her son's blood was not shed in vain.
