The earthquake's epicenter was located at sea, 36 kilometers southeast of Karatung Island, at a depth of 115 kilometers. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, Sarangani Island experienced a 6.0 magnitude earthquake. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology identified the earthquake's epicenter as being 4.54 miles north of the capital, Manila, at a depth of 155 miles.
