The Army of the Democratic Republic of Congo stated today, Thursday, that Rwandan defense forces crossed the Congolese border and attacked border security forces. The army added in a statement, "The subsequent clashes enabled the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo to repel the Rwandan terrorists who carried out this unacceptable provocation," noting that the attackers retreated to Rwanda.
Congo and Rwanda have been in conflict since last year over the resurgence of the M23 rebel group, a militia active in eastern Congo, which Kinshasa accuses Rwanda of supporting. Rwanda has continually denied this. United Nations experts have also stated that they have evidence that Rwandan forces fought alongside the M23 movement in eastern Congo and supplied the rebels with weapons and supplies.
