Zelensky Urges New Defense Minister to Rebuild Trust

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tasked new Defense Minister Rustem Umerov with reducing bureaucracy and rebuilding trust within his ministry following a series of corruption allegations. As Umerov is introduced to senior military leaders and defense officials, a day after parliament approved his appointment, Zelensky outlined priorities that include enhancing international cooperation and steering Ukraine toward NATO membership. Umerov, 41, replaces Oleksii Reznikov, who played a significant role in securing billions in Western military aid since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Although Reznikov himself faced no corruption allegations, he fell victim to a smear campaign. Umerov stated that his priorities will include making the ministry the main coordinating body for defense forces, enhancing the value associated with individual soldiers, developing Ukraine's military industry, and combating corruption. Zelensky dismissed the former defense minister following corruption allegations made by some Ukrainian media, particularly concerning procurement. Military analysts indicated that the change would not have a significant impact on the war in Ukraine.
