The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, predicted that the organization would lift the emergency status related to the COVID-19 pandemic sometime this year, without providing a specific timeline. A meeting of the expert committee on the pandemic is scheduled for May. The organization has continued to regard COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern since its original assessment more than three years ago.
