Title: Guterres: A Rapid Force is Necessary to Disarm Haitian Gangs

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres indicated to the Security Council, in a report obtained by Reuters today, that the "use of a rapid force" is essential for a multinational police force deployed in Haiti and equipped with military gear to enforce law and order and to disarm the gangs. Guterres called on countries worldwide once again to contribute to such a force and urged the Security Council to support its deployment. He also outlined two potential options for the UN to provide logistical support for a multinational force and for the Haitian police, as well as to enhance the existing UN political mission in Haiti.
