The World Loses 41,000 Square Kilometers of Tropical Forests

The world has lost a significant area of rainforests over the past year (equivalent to the size of Switzerland), particularly in the Brazilian Amazon. The "Global Forest Watch" platform, supported by the World Resources Institute and relying on forest data collected by the University of Maryland, revealed that "the world lost approximately 41,000 square kilometers of tropical rainforests in 2022." Despite a recent global commitment to halt deforestation, the losses of tropical forests last year surpassed the levels of 2021. Frances Seymour, a representative from the World Resources Institute, noted that "the 2022 figures are particularly disappointing." She stated, "We had hoped to see promising data by now regarding a turning point in forest loss." "Global Forest Watch" conducted an assessment of pristine forests, which include mature forests that have not been logged or replanted in recent history.
