The Iraqi Artists Syndicate and the Arab Theatre Authority mourned today, Sunday, the theater director and actor Mohsen Al-Izawi, who passed away at the age of 84 after a battle with illness. In a tweet, the Iraqi Prime Minister also expressed his condolences, stating that Al-Izawi "left a clear mark throughout a rich, serious, and purposeful artistic career that extended for decades." He concluded with a prayer, asking God to grant Al-Izawi mercy and to inspire his family and loved ones with patience and solace.
**His History and Works**
Al-Izawi was born in April 1939 in the city of Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar Governorate. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, specializing in theater, and then continued his studies at the Academy of Dramatic and Musical Arts in Prague.
He directed more than 60 plays, including: "Tantal," "The Minister's Lady," "The World in One Night," "A Innocent Invitation to Love," "Your Host This Evening," "The Anthem of Earth," "The Swing of Lost Time," and "The Fire."
He also participated in acting in series such as "Phobia of Baghdad," "Strangers of the Night," "The Delusional," "Exile of the Homeland," "A Man Above Suspicion," "Travel and Stations," "Harvest of Orchards," "Women in a Tale," "Black of Night," and others.
He held many positions, including Director of the National Theater Troupe from 1975 to 1982 and Director of the National Folk Arts Troupe from 1987 to 1991.
He authored several research books and published his memoirs in a book titled "Betting on Time - An Autobiography in Chapters and Scenes" in 2017.
His works have received numerous theater awards, and he was honored by the Baghdad International Theater Festival in 2021.
