Juventus Midfielder Under Investigation for Illegal Betting

The public prosecutor in Turin reported on Wednesday that "Nicolo Fagioli, a midfielder for Italian club Juventus, is currently under investigation for alleged illegal betting," confirming earlier press reports. The daily newspaper "La Stampa" stated that "the 22-year-old player is involved in a criminal investigation targeting users of illegal online betting platforms alongside other unidentified suspects." Enrica Gabita confirmed in a statement via email, without going into details, the news of the investigation.

The newspaper did not specify the type of betting Fagioli is involved in. Italian authorities prohibit players from betting on football matches but allow wagering on other types of gambling. A source close to the case indicated that "the prosecutor's office of the Italian Football Federation is also looking into Fagioli's case, corroborating another part of La Stampa's report." Any player found guilty of betting on football matches faces a minimum three-year ban and a fine of at least €25,000 (approximately $26,517.50) under Italian federation rules.

Juventus declined to comment on the matter, and attempts to reach Fagioli for comment were unsuccessful. Fagioli has participated in six out of eight matches for Juventus in the Italian league this season. He made his debut for the Italian national team last November, coming on as a substitute in a friendly match that ended in a 3-1 away victory against Albania.
