India, the world's largest rice exporter, has banned the shipment of non-basmati white rice to maintain local prices at affordable levels. The government halted the export of the grain with immediate effect, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, confirming a report published by Bloomberg on July 13. Shipments will be allowed based on permits granted by the Indian government to other countries to meet their food security needs and upon their request, it stated.
