The Iraqi governorate of Basra has begun the demolition and removal of the Al-Saraji Mosque under the pretext of expanding the "Abu Al-Khasib" road in southern Basra, sparking a wave of anger and criticism on social media platforms.
Basra Governor As'ad Al-Aidani stated that "the purpose of demolishing Al-Saraji Mosque is to complete the expansion of the street, in response to the demands of citizens and vehicle owners due to the severe congestion as it is located in the middle of the road."
Al-Aidani clarified that the local government will rebuild the minaret and expand the mosque in a manner befitting its historical significance and in line with the urban development taking place in the province, indicating that the land will be leveled and the mosque reconstructed.
He further explained that "the demolition process was coordinated with the Director of the Sunni Endowment during his recent visit to the province."
