The "Weather Arabia" website published a video today, Tuesday, illustrating the stages that Derna went through during the catastrophic hurricane. According to the video, unprecedented rainfall fell along the 60 km valley, and then water rushed down from the surrounding mountains with great force. The water flowed through the valley powerfully, sweeping away everything in its path, including the Derna Valley Dam and the Derna Waterfall Dam, driving the water forcefully towards the city of Derna, akin to a tsunami wave. This tidal wave swept away residential areas on both sides of the valley, leading to significant material and human losses. The National Center for Meteorology in Libya reported that the rainfall level in eastern Libya exceeded 400 millimeters, a level not seen in the country for 40 years.
