The spokesman for the Suez Canal Authority in Egypt stated in a statement today, Wednesday, that "navigation in the canal was not affected after the container ship (One Orpheus) lost its rudder due to colliding with a bridge."
The incident occurred in the eastern lane of the middle section of the canal, known as the New Suez Canal, which was completed in 2015 as part of an expansion plan for the canal. The authority mentioned that the passage of ships in the southern convoy was diverted from the new canal to the original canal.
In a later statement, the authority indicated that the (One Orpheus) vessel and six other ships behind it resumed their passage through the canal normally after the rudder malfunction was repaired and the vessel was confirmed to be seaworthy.
Earlier, the Egyptian news channel had stated: "The Suez Canal Authority is handling the halt of navigation in the new canal from the east after a container ship collided with a bridge."
