Dutch emergency services announced that at least one person has died, and 30 others have been injured, some seriously, when a passenger train carrying around 50 people derailed early Tuesday morning after colliding with construction equipment on the tracks. Rescue teams were seen transferring the injured before dawn from the accident site in the village of Voorschoten near The Hague. A spokesperson for the fire department told Dutch radio that 19 injured individuals were transported to the hospital, while emergency services indicated that some of the wounded received treatment at the accident site.
According to the ANP news agency, the front carriage of the night train from Leiden to The Hague derailed and fell into a field after the incident, the second carriage overturned, and a fire broke out in the rear carriage before it was extinguished later. The Dutch railway company stated on Twitter: "Trains between Leiden and parts of The Hague have been canceled due to the accident."
