Judicial Reforms in Israel by August?

A senior member of the Israeli Knesset from the ruling Religious Zionist coalition indicated today, Monday, that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government might pass part of its plan to introduce amendments to the judicial system by August if negotiations with the opposition fail to reach a compromise. Netanyahu stated, "The amendments aim to balance powers and address the expansion of judicial authority." However, he suspended legislation in late March to allow for negotiations with opposition parties. Simcha Rothman, head of a major review committee in the Knesset, mentioned on Israeli Channel 12 regarding the end of the parliamentary session on July 30: "If the opposition does not wish to reach an agreement, then we will be forced, in my opinion, to move forward with some amendments." He expressed his belief that "the time has come" to approve the bill reorganizing the judicial selection process, as the bill has already passed its first reading in the Knesset, where the ruling coalition holds 64 out of 120 seats.
