U.S. officials announced today, Tuesday, that the United States has renewed a 120-day sanctions exemption allowing Iraq to pay Iran for electricity. They added that Iran will only be able to use this money for trade related to humanitarian activities. An unnamed U.S. official told reporters, "Today... we renew the exemption for Iraq (from Iran sanctions) regarding electricity... this is the 21st exemption related to electricity since 2018. The renewal will be for another 120 days. This measure will allow Iraq to use its own funds to pay for Iranian electricity imports through restricted Iranian accounts in Iraq."
