Kommersant reported today, Tuesday, that Russian President Vladimir Putin may announce next month his intention to run in the presidential elections scheduled for 2024, which could pave the way for him to remain in power at least until 2030. The newspaper cited unnamed sources close to the presidency, indicating that officials expect Putin to declare his candidacy for the elections scheduled for March during a conference to be held in November.
The newspaper also mentioned that there are other scenarios regarding what Putin might do at the conference. The Kremlin did not immediately comment on the newspaper's report. Putin assumed the presidency from Boris Yeltsin on the last day of 1999 and has led Russia longer than any other ruler since Joseph Stalin, even surpassing Leonid Brezhnev, who ruled for 18 years. Putin will turn 71 on October 7th.
