A court document reviewed by Reuters shows that Carlos Ghosn, the former president of Nissan, is seeking over a billion dollars in damages from the company in a lawsuit filed with the public prosecutor in Lebanon last month.
In the lawsuit filed on May 18, Ghosn accused Nissan, along with two other companies and 12 individuals named, of defamation, slander, and fabricating material evidence.
Ghosn, who was once a leading figure in the global automotive industry, was arrested in Japan in late 2018 and charged with financial misconduct. He denied the charges, claiming that his detention was part of a conspiracy orchestrated by Nissan executives to obstruct a merger deal.
Ghosn fled Japan, hiding in a box on a private plane in September 2019, to Lebanon, where he spent his childhood. Prior to that, he was awaiting trial in Japan on charges of failing to disclose income sources, breach of trust, and embezzling company funds, which he has repeatedly denied.
Upon arriving in Lebanon, Ghosn stated that he escaped from a "fake" judicial system in Japan.
