America Imposes Sanctions on Individuals and Entities in Yemen and Other Countries

The United States imposed sanctions on Thursday on 13 individuals and entities, alleging that they transferred tens of millions of dollars in foreign currency to the Yemeni Houthi group from the sale and shipment of Iranian goods. The U.S. Treasury Department stated that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard supported the scheme, which involves a complex network of exchange companies and businesses in multiple countries, including Yemen, Turkey, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Treasury Undersecretary Brian Nelson reported that the funds provided by Iran facilitated recent attacks carried out by the Houthis on commercial ships in the Red Sea, jeopardizing international trade. The Treasury's statement quoted Nelson saying, "The Houthis continue to receive funding and support from Iran, and the outcome is not surprising. Unjustified attacks on civilian infrastructure and commercial shipping disrupt maritime security and threaten international trade."
