The Senegalese national team won the African Nations Championship (CHAN-2022) title after defeating their Algerian counterparts in the final via penalties, 5-4 (regulation and extra time: 0-0), at the "Nelson Mandela" Stadium in Baraki (Algiers). After a scoreless regulation time and two extra halves, both teams went to a penalty shootout where the score remained tied until the decisive penalty missed by player Mahiou, granting the rival an opportunity to equalize and secure the title. Additionally, Ahmed Kendouci also missed a penalty for the Desert Foxes. This victory follows in the footsteps of the Senegalese senior team, which won the Africa Cup of Nations-2021 (postponed to 2022) in Cameroon. It marks the first loss for coach Majid Bougherra’s squad in the tournament after recording five victories, scoring nine goals, and not conceding any. Notably, this was Algeria’s second participation in the African Championship for local players, following their first in Sudan (2011), where they finished fourth after losing the placement match against the host nation.
