China is preparing for a new wave of COVID-19 infections, which could reach 65 million cases per week, following the easing of pandemic restrictions and days after the World Health Organization announced the end of the health emergency related to COVID-19. This health data was revealed by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a medical conference this week in Guangzhou, southern China, which was the birthplace of the pandemic. According to state media, Zhong informed attendees that the new wave, which began in late April, was "anticipated," and his statistical model indicates that China could approach 40 million infections per week, with infections peaking at 65 million per week by the end of June. In comparison, the United States reported over 5 million cases weekly at the peak of the pandemic wave in 2022.
