Imran Khan Banned from Political Work for 5 Years

The Pakistan Election Commission decided today, Tuesday, to ban former Prime Minister Imran Khan from engaging in political activities for five years following his conviction on corruption charges. The commission stated that the ban on Khan was due to his conviction, saying, "Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi has been disqualified for five years."

In response, Khan's aide, Zhufikar Bukhari, told Reuters, "We knew this would inevitably happen," adding that the party would appeal the disqualification decision in the Supreme Court. Bukhari affirmed, "We are very confident that this decision will be overturned."

Khan's lawyer mentioned that his legal team filed an appeal on Tuesday against his conviction, and the Supreme Court will review the appeal tomorrow, Wednesday. Khan's legal team noted that he is being held in miserable conditions in a small, third-class cell with an open toilet in a prison in Attock, near the capital, Islamabad, while he is entitled to be held in a second-class cell that includes a separate bathroom along with newspapers, books, and a television.
